Habitat Committees

Family Selection Committee
The responsibilities of the Family Selection Committee are to establish the selection criteria and application, screen applications, interview prospective families and recommend families to the board for approval for home ownership. The integrity of the Habitat program depends on a fair, objective and non-discriminatory family selection policy.

Nurturing Committee
The Nurturing Committee is the primary liaison between the partner families and Habitat and enables Habitat to learn from the homeowners and to constantly improve its program to better serve the needs of the families. The Committee’s activities are aimed at the development and empowerment of persons and communities by recognizing the problems often found in families of low income, such as lack of education, improper nutrition and health care, debts, low self-esteem and frustration, and to provide the family with love and support to overcome them. Committee members should have the ability to work with people and be sensitive to their needs without being patronizing.

Site Selection Committee
The Site selection Committee’s responsibility is to identify and recommend to the Board property for acquisition. The committee also manages the negotiations with property sellers and the legal, financial and regulatory aspects of the site acquisition process.

Building/Construction Committee
The Building Committee takes responsibility for construction planning and implementation of the plan, including scheduling, developing and nurturing relations with the professional building community, acquisition of materials, working with Partner Families and volunteers, liaison with building inspectors and municipalities, and controlling costs. The Building Committee is also responsible for recruiting, training and supervising volunteers and Partner Family members at the construction site, for soliciting in-kind donations of materials and skilled services from area construction professionals, and for monitoring the compliance with all building codes and safety measures during the construction of Habitat houses.

Executive Committee
The members of the Executive Committee include the officers of the Board of Directors and one at-large member. The chairperson of the Board is the chair of the Executive Committee. The purpose of the Executive Committee is to handle Board member relations and corporate affairs between regular board meetings. The committee generally does not have the power to alter or revoke any previous order, resolution or vote of a meeting of the board unless specifically granted such power by the Board. The committee shall report all its interim actions in writing at the next regular or special meeting of the Board. The Executive Committee also has the responsibility for Human Resources and Strategic Planning for the Board of Directors, as needed.

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee is responsible for recruiting and selecting board members who are effective and representative of the entire community, and present a slate of nominees for election as Directors at the annual meeting. The Nominating Committee also presents a slate of candidates for officers of the Board.

Fundraising Committee
Fundraising Committee’s responsibility is to plan and implement fundraising activities to support the programs and operations of Habitat for Humanity. Fundraising activities should consist of a balanced variety of individual, corporate, church, organizational, special events and planned giving activities that will raise sufficient funds for the following year’s building plans. The Fundraising Committee should work collaboratively with the Public Relations Committee to maximize the effectiveness of the community message being presented.

Public Relations Committee
The Public Relations Committee is responsible for planning and implementing all publicity and community outreach intended to increase the public awareness and commitment to the Habitat for Humanity mission. Regular activities will include community newsletters, brochures, fliers, public speaking opportunities, press releases and other media contacts.

Church Relations Committee
The Church Relations Committee is responsible for outreach to area churches in order to inform and engage them in the mission of Habitat for Humanity. Encouraging engagement by churches in Habitat involves contacting area churches, providing information about Habitat activities and outcomes, recruiting volunteers and financial contributions, and building relationships with our church neighbors.
